Though English is widely spoken in business, a strong knowledge of German is virtually essential for almost all fields of work. Eastern European languages like Slovenian and Hungarian may also be useful, as they are the official languages of certain Austrian provinces.

By 2023, unskilled work in the area of goods manufacturing will continue to decline whereas, due to the highly service-orientated economy in Austria as a whole, there will be a slight increase in unskilled work in the tertiary sector.
The number of employees with compulsory school-leaving qualifications as their highest level of education fell sharply in 2020, while the number of employees with academic degrees (university, college, academy, university of applied sciences) will continue to grow.
