Exploring the country

Austria, one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations, attracts tourists year-round with places to visit in both summer and winter. It holds a huge array of landscapes: around ¾ of the country is dominated by the Alps, with only about 1/3 is lower than 500 metres above sea level; the flattest parts are found in the east, while the north and the south east are moderately hilly.

Beside the beautiful cities of Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz and many others, of great touristic importance are the Austrian skiing, hiking and mountaineering resorts in the Alps as well as family-friendly recreation areas. The same applies to the numerous Austrian lakes and castles. Stretching over Vorarlberg and Tyrol, Ski Arlberg is the largest connected ski area in Austria and one of five largest ski areas in the world.

Austria is also home to 12 sites to the World Heritage List. Find the Unesco List of World Heritage Sites in Austria.

Austria is also part of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe. The routes are an invitation to travel and to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Europe by bringing people and places together in networks of shared history and heritage. They cover a range of different themes, from architecture and landscape to religious influences, from gastronomy and intangible heritage to the major figures of European art, music and literature.
