Health System

Austria is known for having one of the most generous and greatest healthcare systems across the world. Healthcare needs are readily accessible to Austrian citizens at little to no cost.
Austria has a two-tier health care system in which virtually all individuals receive publicly funded care, but they also have the option to purchase supplementary private health insurance.

Healthcare in Austria is universal for residents of Austria as well as those from other EU countries. Citizens from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland with national health insurance in their home country can use the European Health Insurance Card (HEIC). The EHIC guarantees coverage for treatment due to a chronic or pre-existing illness, as well as pregnancy and childbirth.
The European Health Insurance card makes it possible to receive healthcare under the same conditions as citizens in the respective country, and to apply for reimbursement of treatment costs. The costs of repatriation to the country of residence are not covered.
