Health system
The Danish healthcare system is a residence-based system, universal and based on the principles of free and equal access to healthcare for all citizens. If you are living in Denmark and are registered in the Danish Civil Registration System, you are entitled to all public healthcare benefits.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles you to state provided medical treatment that may become necessary during your stay. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Danish nationals.
If you intend to stay for a period of more than three months you must apply for an EU residence document and you must notify the Citizens Service Centre in your municipality of your stay.
Please find here information about how to register in Denmark: lifeindenmark.borger.dk/settle-in-denmark/ics-international-citizen-service
You must bring your Danish health card (the yellow card) when you see a doctor, a specialist, a psychologist, a pharmacist, when you go to the hospital and to the municipality.
You can get medical treatment anywhere in the country by contacting a Danish National Health Service doctor, during consultation hours. If you are in urgent need of medical care outside office hours, you can contact an emergency doctor (Lægevagten). You can find the emergency doctors in the website: laegevagten.dk/kontakt-laegevagten
