Health system
The German health care system is among the best in Europe. European citizens who travel to Germany and have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can receive medical treatment through the local public health service without incurring any costs.
The EHIC guarantees coverage for treatment due to a chronic or pre-existing illness, as well as pregnancy and childbirth. The costs of repatriation to the country of residence are not covered.
The EHIC is only recognised by doctors and hospitals affiliated with public health insurance funds (recognised by the words "Kassenarzt" - public doctor - or "alle Kassen" - all health insurance funds). Private health care is not covered.
