Transport
The Netherlands is a small and densely populated country with an excellent public transport system. Wherever in the Netherlands you want to go, you can get there easily and in comfort by train, bus, tram or ferry.
The Netherlands is not just a small country, which makes for relatively short distances, but the road network is extensive and well-maintained as well. The road signs are very clear, which makes driving a car in the Netherlands very safe. Another advantage is that it has just two toll roads: the Western Scheldt Tunnel and Dordtse Kil. Tolls are charged on a very small number of roads.
Railway travel is a comfortable way to get around. The country boasts an extensive railway network, and the trains are modern and perfectly comfortable.
Dutch public transport requires a so-called OV-chipkaart, a smart card that can be used for bus, tram, train and metro services. The ‘OV-kaart’ (a contactless smart card for public transport) allows you to travel with all transport operators. Sometimes a journey might involve several transport operators.
The Netherlands is the ultimate biking country! With a flat landscape, short distances, a mild climate and excellent infrastructure, it’s no surprise that biking is highly popular.
Cycling in this country is a safe, easy and relaxed activity. More than 32,000 kilometres of bike paths stretch out in all directions, so you can go wherever you want. More than 30,000 kilometres of biking route networks have been set out, which are indicated by way of the cycling junction network and e long-distance LF Routes.
The largest airport in the Netherlands is Amsterdam Schiphol, which is the third-largest in Europe. Smaller airports with scheduled passenger service are Rotterdam The Hague Airport (formerly known as Zestienhoven), Groningen Airport Eelde, Eindhoven Airport and Maastricht Aachen Airport.
In a country as richly endowed with waterways as the Netherlands, public transport by water is an important feature. So it makes sense that the Netherlands features various ferry services to take you from A to B.
