University
Despite its relatively small population of around 10 million, Sweden is ranked worldwide among the leaders in higher education, hosting some of the world’s best universities.
Most of the 50 universities and colleges of the country are state-run, but some are independent institutions of higher education-
Sweden has a higher education degree structure and other reforms in line with the current European-wide Bologna process aiming at harmonizing higher education structures in Europe. There are three levels, or cycles – first cycle (Bachelor’s level), second cycle (Master’s level) and third cycle (doctoral level). The Ministry of Education and Science is responsible for higher education and research.
The teaching model applied at Swedish universities and university colleges is based on the motto ‘freedom with responsibility’, which means that the learning process takes place outside of the classroom, with students mainly pursuing their studies on their own or in groups.
It’s easy for international students to study there, even if they can’t speak Swedish: this country ranks as one of the top countries in the world for non-native speakers of English and it offers over 1,000 degree programmes in English: more than 100 bachelor’s programmes, more than 900 master’s programmes
Higher education in Sweden is financed largely by tax revenue. Tuition fees are fully subsidised for students from Sweden, the EU/EEA area and Switzerland.
