Transport
Getting around Sweden is easy. From trains and buses, to cars, the options are many!
Concerning air, the national carrier is SAS Scandinavian Airlines which operates connecting flights to major cities in Sweden via Stockholm. Through its Star Alliance members, SAS links many parts of the world directly to Sweden.
To travel to the southern part of Sweden you can also fly into Copenhagen in Denmark and cross the now famous Öresund Bridge.
Concerning trains, the most sustainable way of seeing Sweden, the main rail transport hubs in Sweden are in capital city Stockholm, Gothenburg on the west coast, and Malmö in the south. There are daily high-speed services with SJ between all three, and a high-speed train service between Stockholm and Stockholm Arlanda Airport called Arlanda Express. So as soon as you step off the plane you could be embarking on a fabulous rail journey around Sweden.
The X 2000 high-speed tilting train travels at up to 200 km/hour (125 mph) on all major routes and offers the highest standards of comfort.
The Swedish rail network is operated by a few major train operators; SJ, Vy (previously Tågkompaniet), Snälltåget and Inlandsbanan. MTRX and FlixTrain operate between Stockholm and Gothenburg. Tickets can be purchased on each train operator's website.
Concerning buses, FLIXBUS offers an efficient and affordable network of coach services in Sweden, including some cross-border routes. To check timetables and book your bus tickets, see global.flixbus.com/bus/sweden.
In Sweden there are two different kinds of road toll schemes, Infrastructure charge and Congestions tax. Both schemes use fixed gentries and the vehicles passing is identified through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). This means that you don't need any kind of on-board unit or sticker to drive in Sweden.
Congestion taxes are paid in Stockholm and Gothenburg and infrastructure charges (bridge tolls) in Motala and Sundsvall, which are intended to help to finance the bridges. The idea is that the people who use the bridges help to pay for part of the cost of the bridges.
